i work in state government , have windows 2008 r2 server failed on updates starting march 20, 2012.  until point, updates downloading , installing fine.  fails code 8000ffff every time.  have done following during course of troubleshooting issue: 1. rebooted 2. tried installing updates 1 @ time 3. disabled anti-virus software 4. run system update readiness tool 5. run system file checker tool (sfc.exe) 6. reset content of catroot2 folder 7. tried remove hkey_local_machine\components -> pendingxmlidentifier, nextqueueentryindex, , advancedinstallersneedresolving, none of them existed on machine. 8. registered windows update dll files 9. renamed softwaredistribution folder 10.  rolled updates installed since server went production status none of above items has resolved issue, updates still not install.  note, running several servers exact same build , have not encountered issue. hello, try to: run chkdsk /r /f reset windows update components

we get replication errors when updating manager field on random user objects it not related particular problem domain controller (it moves around other dcs). we updating manager field via batch script had blank them out in order fix replication.  problem occurs when updating manager field via gui (aduc)….so isolates scripting related errors equation. we have 4 2008r2 dcs (functional level 2008r2) , there no other active directory issues.....everything revolves around 1 "manager" field under user object's organizational tab. david w king update:   determined there manager field corruption on undetermined subset of user objects on 1 or 2 of our dcs.  though objects on our dcs showed manager field <unset>....some of them were really "jacked up" , problem reared ugly  when tried set object other "blank"....at time replication stop , we'd have clear them on again.  clearing of course cleared on dcs replicating each other....it

using windows server 2012 standard domain server in small business environment. (15 computers max). am set externally, , outside network can connect https://mysite.com/rdweb no problems. when click "connect computer" option, fill in computer name , click connect. note rd gateway servername server.mysite.com instead of mysite.com obviously, can't connect remote computer. however, if start rd program , fill in rg credentials should (mysite.com) connect no problems. i'm "guessing" need dns. need add host record? if so, i"ve no idea where. guidance appreciated. update: found solution. open iis manager , navigate default web site/rdweb/pages/en-us open application settings and change defaulttsgateway correct address default address servername.mysite.com  changing mysite.com fixed issue. 1 thing noted changing 1 level below @ pages, not inherited en-us. hi, glad hear issue solved. sharing solution. best regards, aiden   aiden cao

i think title speaks itself.  we have round robin setup 2 proprietary web servers balance load between them.  we have set ttl of records 8 hours, yet clients lose these records after 15 minutes , consequently query server record again.  this problem because servers hand out stateful web services.  when user gets record "a" , begins working, when client loses record cache , receives record "b", must re-login page , begin work anew.   i have setup powershell scripts monitor dns cache , log ttl of given resource record.  in every case of monitoring, record close ttl expiring.   is there i'm missing shining right in face? hi how did set local cache ttl? if ttl value in dns answer record exceeds value of entry in local ttl, ignored, , dns client sets ttl value value of entry. to set caching time on client computer: start registry editor (regedit.exe). locate , click following key in registry: hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\serv

dear sir, i have windows server 2008 clustered san disks (iscsi) storage array connected.  event system log prompted event id55: "the file system structure on disk corrupt , unusable.  please run chkdsk utility on <volume name>."  after system running more half year.  i have failover storage array host , original host run chkdsk long time , try fix filesystem error.  after running chkdsk /f, files still corrupted , can't recover.  i know why has such problem although there no hardware error found (from error leds , log) , no hardware error logs san storage manager? thanks ray windows 2008 has self healing property log these errors. can disable it fsutil repair set <drive:> 0 but not advised so. if files corrupt nothing can done. on contrary can install latest ntfs.sys kb2792165 on windows 2008. contains ntfs fixes. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2792165 regards satish

i released july updates onto our network past weekend.  i'd deployed our new av previous week.  let's av mixed hyper-v , followed reboot made nice mess.   logged hyper-v lab on monday morning find half of vm's missing.  they're sitting fine (but idle) on storage.  it's hyper-v has "forgotten" ever existed. i trawled through windows event logs (application , service logs - microsoft - windows - hyper-v-config - admin) , found series of these: source: hyper-v-config event id: 4096 level: error the virtual machines configuration <big long guid> @ <path vm> no longer accessible: requested operation cannot performed on file user-mapped section open. (0x800704c8) ok.  bit of googling found entry on technet forums says need disable scanning vhd's , xml files of vm's.  ouch! doublechecked av , found hadn't done thought had. ok, did , rebooted hyper-v lab server.  still no dice.  actually, hyper-v doesn't bother attempt

we running performance problem on our windows server 2012/sql 2012 hyper-v vm, , noticed caused defrag running. turned out schedules run once every week. we surprised this, because untill 2008 r2 never enabled default schedules automatically. i wondering why defrag scheduled automatically out of box windows server 2012. hi, based on description, check in lab environment. say, can find same situation. please open task scheduler. locate to: task scheduler library->microsoft-> windows-> defrag folder. find scheduleddefrag task. in windows server 2008 r2, run time trigger trigger scheduled task. in windows server 2012, defrag task doesn’t run on time trigger anymore. instead, defrag task a maintenance mode task . default, storage optimizer run once week during maintenance hour. in addition, command in action tab more intelligent. in server 2008 r2, can find command: defrag.exe –c the “defrag –c” run traditional defrag on volumes. in se

we have ~ 40 servers static ip addresses ‘register in dns’.   we dcprpmoed new dc (2008r2) , have servers looking new dc dns primary , 1 of older dcs secondary dns lookup.   all 3 dcs replicating dns ok (checked via command line) , after ~ 18 hrs after pointing servers @ new dc primary dns, dynamic registrations getting lost / new dc wont return registrations when queried dns clients.   the quick fix has been hop server registrations have vanished (or new dc has decided not spit requesting dns client) , run ipconfig /register dns.   i have seen severs ‘disappear’ within ~20 min of /registerdns. we have ~ 40 servers static ip addresses ‘register in dns’.   we dcprpmoed new dc (2008r2) , have servers looking new dc dns primary , 1 of older dcs secondary dns lookup.   all 3 dcs replicating dns ok (checked via command line) , after ~ 18 hrs after pointing servers @ new dc primary dns, dynamic registrations getting lost / new dc wont return registration

hi, i've put in place execute of powershell (ps) on ws 2008 r2 std sp1 64 bit machine (server 1) instructs a ws2003 std sp2 machine (server 2, not sure if 32 or 64 bit) execute bat file on server 2. we have 3rd party product use alert if services have stopped.  from i've read seems minimally i'd want product alert if windows remote management (ws-management) service on either machine has stopped.  service name sounds same winrm read in literature i'm not sure. service want monitor? also, http listener being enabled , me thru fraction of documentation, there other things can monitor alert proactively powershell fail?  if yes, tools(s) mcan use monitor additional items if aren't services.   this done attaching email notification service object on versions or windows including ws2003.  @ recovery options of service . can set group policy or hand or wtit sc: sc failure <service name> \_(ツ)_/

we had imaging system consisted of app , sql vm servers stored dataon iscsi sotre device, tha tthe server connect using iscsi connector. during upgrade, added updated apps , sql server , pointed these 2 new servers same data volume (no application software loaded yet). on day of install, loaded application , configures new sql see data volume. next day, lost user rights, repaired, next day, data volume crashed , lost data files. 1 tech says sids original , new systems crashed user rights, after repairs, damage actual data files on iscsi volume. see article sids have such problems on workgroups on domain, unique sid numbers allow multiple device access. thoughts ? thanks zarrr hi, can't share 1 iscsi target multiple clients (servers, esx, xen etc.) except running cluster. under wrong conditions, allowing multiple hosts access single target exceptionally bad idea. doing can lead manners of problems, including data corruption. more detailed information, refer art

i installed win xp vm on hyper v, , installed sp3 , integrated services. vm set use local area connection under settings. sitting on windows 2008 server when in device manager see: microsoft virtual machine bus network adapter. it said limited or no connectivity in system tray.   how can network working? okay - have virtual networks assigned.. lets bit. can please following: 1) verify have dhcp on network 2) please list the virtual networks have defined on hyper-v server. running 8.1 upgrade 7.  file history not turned on. getting many 18 duplicates of (1) file.  there 20,000 duplicate files! computer has become slow doing takes minutes instead of seconds!  i know problem has been out there long time.  has microsoft found fix this?????? hi, so client os not server os right? make sure have antivirus software installed , running latest patches. try running full scan. also microsoft mrt removing malware. wasn't aware of kind of behavior. like dave asked, path , file types might provide help. check see if have scheduled tasks run on computer. if server os there deduplication feature works great not sure available client os. http://mariusene.wordpress.com/ Windows Server  >  Windows Server General Forum
