Windows Server 2008 R2 - Failed Updates Error Code 8000FFFF
i work in state government , have windows 2008 r2 server failed on updates starting march 20, 2012. until point, updates downloading , installing fine. fails code 8000ffff every time. have done following during course of troubleshooting issue:
1. rebooted
2. tried installing updates 1 @ time
3. disabled anti-virus software
4. run system update readiness tool
5. run system file checker tool (sfc.exe)
6. reset content of catroot2 folder
7. tried remove hkey_local_machine\components -> pendingxmlidentifier, nextqueueentryindex, , advancedinstallersneedresolving, none of them existed on machine.
8. registered windows update dll files
9. renamed softwaredistribution folder
10. rolled updates installed since server went production status
none of above items has resolved issue, updates still not install. note, running several servers exact same build , have not encountered issue.

try to:
- run chkdsk /r /f
- reset windows update components
once done, check results. if problem persists try downloading updates , installing them manually.
