Unable to modify NTFS permissions as domain or local admin

a user created 4 folders on our file server mac computer. reason unable take ownership of folders, receive access denied when tried to. i've never see happen before while logged in domain admin , local administrator. when go security tab of folder, shows if not logged in administrator. instead of showing list of users, has continue button right under "to continue. must administrative user permission view object's security properties".

when click continue on that, takes me directly advanced security settings instead of displaying "group or user names".

i've tried deleting folders via command line no success.

this file server windows server 2008 r2 sp1.

any ideas?
