Word Document Turns to Read-Only
hi there !
i'm encountering issue ms word 2002 documents sharing via windows server 2003 file server in windows server 2003 domain. when open doc file , edited necessary, save amend changes. sometimes, saves normally. but, after couple of saves (sometime 3 or 4 times, sometime 10 plus times), document prompted save as , read-only sign appeared on document’s title bar. i’ve make sure read-only attribute clear on file , parent folder well. user has full control on ntfs/share permission on file. and, tried turn off automatic backup file feature in word (tools | options | save tab, clear create backup copy), problem still there. once file closed without saving changes , reopen file, it’s open normal document again without read-only sign. then, after changes , saving, turns read-only again.
if came across kind of similar problem , found solution, pls requested share out.
thank you.
regards,
thk
my fisrt shot be: this is microsoft word normal behavior. i'll tell what's going on here.
when the user a opens word document stored on share, ms word creates handle file. if second user (say user b) tries open same file, ms word fail open in exclusive mode. the second attempt open in read-only mode.
what may happen user had closed file, but an open handle remained, causing subsequent attempts open in read-only. can monitor these handles opening computer management console, system tools, shared folders, open files.
additionally, consider ms word behavior varies version. if i'm not mistaken, ms word 2002 documents contains flag controls if user prompted open file in read-only when it's in use. if case, your users may not being prompted, ms word opens in read-only right away if file in use.
