.net framework 4.0 web installer the same as wsus?

the software company requiring update insist use web installer machinces. claim version provided in windows update services not include extended package. disagree because installs client profile , extended package. example on windows xp pro 32 bit machine, updates approved through wsus kb982670(client profile) , kb982671(extended). here link web installer http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=9cfb2d51-5ff4-4491-b0e5-b386f32c0992&displaylang=en

to me web installer looks universal link detects operating system , downloads/installs correct version. looks same me. correct?

the extended package includes client profile. necessary install one, or other, on system. after installing extended package, client profile should reported not applicable.

as correctly note, kb982670 client profile , kb982671 extended (read: complete) package.

a simple observation of "file information" kb982671 lay question rest.

in wsus server, note contents of cab file kb982671 contains single file dotnetfx40_full_x86.exe or dotnetfx40_full_x86_x64.exe x64 systems. kb982670 contains dotnetfx40_client_x86.exe file.

on download page, note file being executed installer dotnetfx40_full_setup.exe , 869kb stub installer. i'm not sure how web installer handles options (i don't have machine available can install .net40 on @ moment), presume on desktop system offers option of basic (client) installation or full (extended) installation, based on note @ bottom of download page, , absence of other instructions on how achieve basic installation.

note: users not have perform server installation. if unsure whether perform server installation, perform basic installation.
