Upgrade from Server 2012 R2 to Server 2016 fails with adprep

i trying upgrade server 2012 r2 essentials system windows 2016 essentials.   presume 2012 version domain controller, because full name looks aaaa.bbb.local.  use automatic backups 5 computers , none of them have joined domain.  log server administrative account, , have group memberships administrator account has, including domain, enterprise, , schema admin groups.  install stops message:   "active directory on domain controller not contain windows server 2016 adprep /forestprep updates.  see http://go.microsoft/fwlink/?linkid=113955."  find adprep executable on install dvd , attempt run in command prompt window.  program fails because claims not member of schema admin group and/or enterprise admin group.  have tried admin command prompt, same results.  bug? or doing wrong?  realize microsoft discourages type of upgrade, didn't think prohibited in way!

Disconnecting from a Windows Server 2012 R2 file sharing session on a Windows 7,8,10 machine
