How to migrate 2 Host 2012R2 Shared Storage Cluster to vNext Storage Cluster

over holidays watched number of teched europe presentations talked vnext's new shared nothing storage cluster functionality (*really* cool btw) , improvements made 'in-place' migration of existing clusters vnext.

the migration presentation recommended upgrade approach of:

  • drain/transfer cluster roles a cluster node other cluster nodes
  • remove node cluster
  • install vnext on node
  • re-add node to cluster (placing cluster 'mixed' 2012/vnext functional level)
  • then 'rinse , repeat' cluster nodes, , when comfortable increase cluster functional level "vnext"

i fine approach outlined except don't see way apply 2 node cluster -- there risk of loss of functionality if single active node runs problem while vnext node being built.  {is expectation "fact of life" , there nothing solve problem?}

further, there no discussion of "in-place" migration shared das shared nothing storage, hope perform migration adding 2 new nodes (it has been suggested shared nothing might need min of 4 nodes) existing cluster, , extend cluster new nodes.  migration plan can see similar above, need upgrade existing nodes (with risk of cluster loss, if active node has problem), add 2 new vnext nodes cluster , add additional hdd/ssd devices each of nodes , migrate existing csvs/volumes new shared nothing storage.  @ least, don't see how able re-use existing hdd/ssd devices (aside them becoming 'free space' in new/final cluster).

am missing anything?

thanks feedback/comments

you able take existing win2012 r2 scale-out file server, , rolling upgrade move vnext no downtime in seamless fashion.

a scale-out file server being deployed spaces in vnext can either in shared or in new shared nothing model.  if have shared spaces solution deployed today, able rolling upgrade vnext continuing in shared model.  moving shared nothing model, new architecture different hardware topology.  means deploying new solution, , migrating on (not upgrading old per se).

thanks!
