Slow Copying Between 2 WIndows 2008 SP2 Servers

we have 2 x asus rs120 e5 servers quad core intel processors, gigabit lan , 8gb ram. have server grade seagate sata drives (i.e. no throughput throttling) running in raid 0 using onboard lsi raid card. each server running windows 2008 server std sp2 , latest updates. both have active directory roles installed. 1 acts primary dc , print server 6 printers, has iis7 enabled light in-house use , second used solely primary file server. both have kaspersky enterprise edition installed (latest version updates)

we have 2008 test server. fast machines plenty of ram, plenty of processing capacity , never have resources on utilised. run @ under 5% cpu usage. have planet gigabit smart switches connect structured cat5e network.

i experiencing big problems in copying large files between servers. when mean large, i’m talking 5-20gb files. virtual disks, or workstation drive images. i’m using simple explorer based file copy , it’s real pain. don’t want resort robocopy or other copy utilities move file a-b want fix problem.

when copy file, starts off copying @ 85mbs, lasts first 1 or 2 gb, starts drop off. when copying test server, progress indicator stops while, restarts running @ around 13mbs. when copying main servers, gradually diminishes around same. usually, kill copy can’t have copying 2 hours. using usb drive.

this indicates nic can handle throughput windows choking copy after cache fills or memory saturated. 2008 server grinds halt during copy and, although recovers afterwards, takes time so. i.e. after cancelling or completing copy, can’t remotely log on server without timing out. after around 5 mins can, sluggish. after around 15 mins seems have recovered. feels if run out of ram task manager shows around 30% ram usage.

i have identical set elsewhere 2 servers identical ones copy issue , running server 2008 sp2, same nic, drives , ram , same planet gigabit switch. can copy @ 40-50mbs on these servers irrespective of file size , nic properties set same. flow control off , checksum , large send offload enabled. no option jumbo packets on broadcom netxtreme nic. convinced not nic or network switch. anyhow, why start fast , slow crawl. can copy first 2-3gb @ on 50mbs.

i searched web , found articles inc hotfix ms related pre sp2 , wont work on sp2 think patch included. i’m @ wits end don’t know try next. there few articles registry hacks fro media throttling etc don’t run media on servers. don’t have office installed.

any clues other things try resolve appreciated.

make sure have patched server. update drivers , firmware nics.

disable large send offload or other offload on nic going properties of nic click configure , advance tab.

reboot server.

if above doesn't work remove av testing since have seens same exact issues caused kaspersky , sep, , other avs on windows 2008 servers
