False "File in Use"


user accesses file on network via windows explorer, gets "file in use" dialog indicating has file open, false.  user clears dialog , can open file fine.  users on network experiencing multiple file types.  intermittent, frequent issue.  users on windows xp, servers windows server 2003 standard.

can see following error message when issue occurs?

 

file in use

the action can’t completed because file open in program

close file , try again.

 

based on our experience, have been reported there third-party anti-virus tools indicate mcshield.exe cause leaking handles, thereby locking file. please check if there anti-virus software on server , client?

 

besides, please check excel version on side , refer following kb article accordingly.

 

the modified date of original .xls file not reset original modified date , time when save .xls file different name in excel 2007

to use "hanlde.exe" in command line, may need change directory folder handle.exe file extracted.

 

please try reproducing issue , use following steps handle.txt when issue occurs.

 

steps:

 

1. download handle following link

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896655.aspx

2. extract handle.zip folder (ex. e:\tools\handle.exe) onto windows server 2003 computer.

 

please note: handle.exe extracted e:\tools folder in example.

 

3. click start

 

4. run

 

5. input cmd

 

6. cd e:\tools\

 

7. may run command under e:\tool directory prompt.

 

e:\tools> handle –a > handle.txt

 

8. may use following command check content of handle.txt file.

 

e:\tools> notepad.exe e:\tools\handle.txt

 

please send handle.txt , give excel file name try open in case. can send log via tfwst@microsoft.com
