i couldn't tell post if server core machine or not.  guess because of forum posting in.  if is, follow joson's link.  if isn't steps below.

the first thing need connectivity server.  if @ work aren't able directly access without launching vpn.

assuming have connectivity, need able reach server either name or ip.  may or may not registering in dns.  if is, when vpn in home laptop should able connect hostname or fqdn.  if isn't in dns, you'll need make note of ip address use in connection.

last thing need enable remote desktop.  can done by:

1. right-click on my computer , select properties
2. on remote tab, select either allow connections computers running version of remote desktop (this allow xp, 2k3, , other clients connect) or allow connections computers running remote desktop nla (you can choose if connecting vista box)

in 2k8 firewall rules should opened automagically can validate going wf.msc from run prompt , checking there rule remote desktop.  can validate have connectivity , server listening rdp running telnet <ip of server> 3389 vista machine (you have add telnet client feature).

when remote box, log on account has ts logon rights (administrators default).
