RDP service will not start Server 2008 R2. Windows could not start the Remote Desktop Services Service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

hey all

need here, officially stumped. 



have windows server 2008 r2. basic setup 1-2 people using rdp. has been solid stable machine, until few nights ago. applied updates through windows update. when computer came back, rdp service not start. says 'windows not start remote desktop services service on local computer. error 2: system cannot find file specified'. ive tried reinstalling rdp.

i have few suggestions try.  


1. run regedit , navigate to hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\termservice\parameters 

check servicedll key, example value see is %systemroot%\system32\termsrv.dll.  makes sure entry valid , file exists.  see if same version , size 1 known working server same patch level.  

2. system file check see if finds , files damaged or missing.  from administrative command prompt (click start, type cmd, right click , select “run administrator”, click yes on uac prompt)

enter ->  sfc /scannow

3. try starting service administrative command line.

c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe -k termsvcs

4. check dependencies in services administrative tool remote desktop service , make sure started.



Windows Server  >  Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Services)

Disconnecting from a Windows Server 2012 R2 file sharing session on a Windows 7,8,10 machine

Event ID 64,77,1008 Certificates Events Windows Server 2008, 2008R2
