i'd know on problematic windows xp computer there has gigabit ethernet nic installed. there known issue event id 1054 (with error message "the specified domain either not exist or not contacted") can occur because link status fluctuates network adapter

driver initializes , network adapter hardware negotiates link network infrastructure. group policy application stack executes before negotiation process completed , can fail because of absence of valid link.

to resolve problem related link status fluctuation use steps in:

239924          how disable media sensing tcp/ip in windows"

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=239924

to prevent network adapter detecting link state:

1. open registry editor (regedt32.exe)

2. go following key in registry:

hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\tcpip\parameters

3. add following registry value:

value name: disabledhcpmediasense

data type: reg_dword -boolean

value data range: 0, 1 (false, true) default: 0 (false)

for further investigation, please send me (tfwst@microsoft.com) system event logs on problematic windows xp computer.
