Windows server 2008 5 CAL vs. Windows server 2008 standard

i'd appreciate direction here. i've bought server has no os requires windows server.  i'm having hard time seeing difference between windows server 2008 5 cal , windows server 2008 standard.

i'm finding windows server 2008 5 cal around $200 , windows server standard around $1000.  want buy 1 $200 want make sure work without having first buy standard $1000.

my eventual goal make server ftp server.

thanks in advance.
