Band New to Windows Server 2008 - How do I setup users on Server 2008 - R2

hi,

i searched how add new users windows 2008, not find wanted.  yes, did not through 992 entries.

experience level:  very little - work charity.  we've been running windows 2000 server.  know how add users server 2000 , grant them rights. 

background:   someone donated server , windows 2008 server us.  found that i'm not resident windows server 2008 expert (which scary).

there 8 local users , 3 remote users.   someday hope tie in remote users via vpn.  @ time, i'm using server filing sharing , running quick books database server software.  not heavy load.

i have installed windows server 20008 r2 on server.  installed file / print sharing , remote desktop access (i post question on in appropriate forum.).

i have os setup on workgroup - not domain.  why - don't understand domains.  have not installed active directories either.  understand, have learn domains , active directory hoping have take 1 step @ time.

i added users using start -> programs -> administrative tools -> computer management -> local users.  right click on users , choose new users.  can go computer on network , log user.  entering \\192.168.2.5 explorer.  log on screen appears.  enters user's server names , password , server logs me on.

on server, created directory @ c:\users\public\documents\user-docs.  each user has sub-directory under user-docs.  user-docs setup shareable , has read access user-docs , sub-directories. 

i'm trying each user  read / write access sub-directory right clicking on appropriate sub-directory , chose properties.  go security tab.  add user dennis list of group or user names , give myself access sub-directory dennis.  properties / security tab shows have full access (full control, modify, read & excute, list folder contents, read, , write checked.)

i open explorer , enter \\192.168.2.5 on user computer , login server user dennis password.  explorer opens user docs.  click on sub-directory dennis , directory opens.  try create sub-directory in dennis right clicking on explorer , choosing new folder.  receive error message:  "you need permission perform action     dennis  type: file folder button try again or cancel.

here question

1.  need can grant read / write permission each user in sub-directories?

2.  need install active directory , domain 8 users?

3.  access server offsite.  have static ip address.  have remote desktop installed.  need access desktop home?

4.  right now, have change user's password on server if user wants change it.  how set when user's changes password on local computer, password changed on server?

5.  can suggest books server 2008.  i've seen lot of books, don't seem go depth on anything.

i appreciate of assistance can get.  i'm little on head huge understatement.

hi,

from side testing, create 2 users named jack li , james xiong. grant full acces permission specifc shared folders. works on side. read/modify/delete .etc in specific folder. however, read jack li's folder without modification.

so suggest windows server 2008 r2, click run, enter lusrmgr.msc. receive local users , group managment console. please make sure mara listed , password specific user not expired. event viewer verify security logging record.
