Unable to connect to Virtual Disk service + other issues

hi,

i have 2008 r2 server, primary duties dc , handling iscsi connection readynas pro.

last week tried setup dfs-r nas attached separate server, looked ok no connection made. i've been trying diagnosis and came number of issues.

• i can setup dfs-r replication not start
• i cannot connect vds
• chkdsk run on boot drive stops @ 67% on iscsi drive unspecified error occurs (696e647863686b2e e19)
• if try disconnect nas using initiator initiator window hangs
• i shut down nas , rebooted still vds wont load.
• if try run windows update window hangs
• a suggestion of repairing wmi failed (sorry vague have looked @ many posts relating these issues)

the common denominator appears svchost netsvcs process handles number of services. unfortunately have no idea when problem occurred or caused quite server doing expect , throwing no errors other when try change things.

i'm limited in tests can try still live server , iscsi connection hosts desktop/my docs folder redirects.

i'm not expecting fix hoping can suggest enhanced way of diagnosing issues.

i experiencing similar issue disk management tool (and diskpart) hang when trying connect 'virtual disk service'. here are relevant components of my configuration:

• windows server 2016 datacenter installed on bare metal dell drivers/firmware up-to-date
• dell poweredge 730 perc 730p configured raid 10 with eight(8) 15k sas drives (st600mp0005) - has nvidia grid k1 card installed
• synology 1815+ nas configured raid 6 five(5) 6tb sata , single nic connected switch
• netgear m4100-26g gigabit switch

 

the synology configured iscsi target , server using 'microsoft iscsi initiator service' automatically reconnect iscsi target upon restart (that seems work fine).

upon physically restarting server, iscsi target reconnected , mapped correctly. appears work except (as in case op) when want make change , need interact virtual disk service so. example the disk mgmt tool (and diskpart) usually hang upon trying connect virtual disk service - , restarting 'virtual disk service' doesn't appear resolve issue.

if system configured not automatically start 'microsoft iscsi initiator service' upon reboot, , instead service started @ point subsequent the reboot completing, would seem things work better - in other words can more reliably expect disk mgmt tool or diskpart will connect/work expected.

as side note, thing led me down road was/is problem microsoft rds pooled vm configuration not populating user profile disks - creates upds they're empty (probably unrelated knows).

i hesitation , less stellar confidence because results not reliable or always reproducible. appear case though, is there correlation failed communication between 'disk mgmt tool' , 'virtual disk service' when 'microsoft iscsi initiator service' running.

 

** update:

after wrangling appear underlying issue internal dvd-rom not functioning properly. though not using it, suspect still needs enumerated/queried virtual disk service (else how appear drive, right?). anyway after disabling device in device manager, appears again in disk land. if things change i'll post update.

issue upd not attaching pooled vms

on note issue user profile disks (which started me on roller coaster) unrelated. apparently when a user logs in pooled vm, the vmms attempts attach user's upd vhdx pooled vm virtual scsi controller location/id '1' , had neglected remove virtual dvd-drive template vm - it was mapped windows installation iso needed build tempalte.

soooo in event viewer there messages including:

• cannot attach storage media controller because specified location in use.
• failed add device 'synthetic disk drive'
• remote desktop virtualization host not attach user profile disk virtual desktop user account sid of

removing vm template , rebuilding pooled vms resolved issue.

just banging head against wall....
